Hormonal Changes

Did you know that perimenopause can begin in your 30's?

In some cases, it can even start in your 20's! That means that your hormones are fluctuating many years before you may realize it. This shift in hormonal balance can have many effects on a woman's body including unwanted hair growth.

I am nowhere near menopause, but I am sprouting facial hair!

Because estrogen generally drops first, testosterone (the androgens responsible for hair growth) can become dominant. This can result in an increase in male pattern hair growth, especially on the face. Got chin hair? A mustache? Give it a few years and you just might!

What is with all the peach fuzz all over my face?

Some women notice an increase in the vellus hair which is normally on the face. It can become very dense, especially on the cheeks, sideburns, upper lip, and chin areas.

I'm not getting dark hair, just really thick gray ones. Can I get rid of those?

Absolutely! Electrolysis is very effective on all colors of hair. Whether you are getting dark, gray, or blonde hairs, we can treat them just the same.

Once my testosterone finally drops later in life, will the hair I sprouted just fall out?

Unfortunately, once a follicle has been stimulated to turn from a vellus hair (soft) into a terminal hair (thick and coarse), it cannot go back to the way it was. However, electrolysis can destroy the hair, thereby stopping that follicle from continuing to produce terminal hair over time. The same is true with vellus hair. Once treated, it too will not return in that follicle.
